Flying Porpoise Over the Mountains

I saw this from near downtown and chased it for 25 minutes or so (and 15-20 road miles) till I got to the hillside,
where this is what remained.

High lenticular cloud margins over the Chugach Mountains near mid day.
Lenticular clouds form over mountains that actually modify the air currents and local weather.
This is common with very high mountains like McKinley and Everest and less so with the Chugach Range.
Could have called it Raven Sky instead.
What do you think?
Porpoise, Raven or what?

i think porpoise fits best. i saw halos or caps over pikes peak in colorado frequently. not as wispy as this, and seemed to change rapidly as the wind blew over the peak, but the little clouds never left the top of the mountain. rather they seemed to form with the wind cresting the peak, and dissipate with the current leaving the peak.this one looks like air brushed.kïrstin☼

  12. Rambling says:

You\’re right! Porpoise! I must be infected with the same sort of chase fever as I went all over where I live here trying (and failing) to get THE picture of a cloud formation over the mountains and no matter where I went, trees were in the way. I had seen the scene 🙂 from across town. I came to the highest road in town and no luck. I drove for miles looking for a perch, anything..no luck. You did great and what a wonderful treat this morning for us!

Porpoise or dolphin a beautiful capture Steve as always. We are full of snow here in the UK now the deepest we have had for 16 years! Of course the country ground to a halt! Simply because we are not used to it and do not have the tyers and chains to get the trafic moving! But great fun was had by all the children as the shools were also closedThanks for all your beautiful images especially the sunsets/rises Love Suki x
